5 Reasons You Should Stop Comparing Yourself To Others

The art of comparing yourself to another – an issue that feels like the bane of my life at the moment and yours too, I’m guessing.

In today’s society, it has become a norm to envy others and therefore begin to compare yourself to them. It’s of course even easier with the likes of social media, which I love to hate! Whether it’s their looks, personality, success or simply their life as a whole – it almost feels like a game of spot what’s wrong with my life!

So why should you stop comparing yourself to everybody around you?

  1. No two journeys will ever be alike.

Truth be told, it’s hard to sit back and accept others success when you feel as though yours is non-existent. However, you should definitely note that no one’s journey will ever resemble another’s.

It doesn’t matter what “step” you’re at in life. What does matter is what efforts you’re putting in to get to that idealistic place. If you’re working hard and trying your best, why would you focus on anyone else? What they’re doing and achieving is completely irrelevant to you! Please remember that.

2. Comparison is not always good for your mind.

Of course, sometimes it can be good to compare ourselves to others, only as a means of bettering yourself or as a motivator. The trick is knowing when it’s time to put down the phone and focus on yourself and YOUR life.

Only you know whether comparing yourself to another, will affect you negatively or positively. Choose wisely!

3.  You should be proud of yourself.

Whilst it’s deemed unacceptable in our society, to actually appreciate yourself and where you’ve gotten in life, you’re allowed to – and you didn’t need me to tell you that. Life can be a big jumble of mess sometimes, yet here you are.

The road to success is seldom straight. Keep that in your mind, always.

An article by Forbes described this perfectly: “society trains us to compare ourselves using outer, socially-constructed measures of success and worthiness”.

4. You’re in competition with yourself only.

When my little friend, jealousy, rears its’ head, I tend to forget that I’m not and never have been in competition with anyone but the person I used to be. Yes, it’s cheesy and cringey and I’m sure you’ve heard it many times before, but it’s true!

Logically, the only person that it actually makes sense to compare yourself to is the person that was. Anyone else is completely irrelevant- another thing you probably didn’t need me to tell you. Use the you that was, to become the you that will be.

5. It’s stalling your own journey.

Whilst you sit and question why you aren’t succeeding or why you don’t look like or bear similarities to so and so, you are in fact stopping your own progress. Brace yourself for some more cheese but you are you and that’s enough. In fact, it’s always been enough. You are worthy in every way and always have been. Your worth is NOT defined by anybody else’s success.

Focus on yourself and trust that your time will come. You will reach your goal one day, and one day is not an excuse, but a possibility as long as you make it so.

Ciao for now x
