With restricted access to exercise and significantly higher time spent sat at home, the worries of weight gain are prevalent at the moment. Each year, we all switch up our diets and up our fitness regimes with the motivation of getting that “Summer Body”. A body deemed acceptable by society to flaunt on Instagram and other social media.
And I am guilty of falling into this trap too. It’s tough. So how do we alleviate the pressure off ourselves during this time?
- Focus on your mental chatter – what is it telling you?
Whilst it’s easier said than done, this is not the time to sit and criticise yourself or your body. Whether you choose to start a 30-minute workout a couple of times a week or simply add some greens and fruits to your current diet, do it to make yourself feel good.
You will have days where you eat out of boredom, skip a workout, or sleep in until midday. Learn to not beat yourself up for it. As the quote by Alice Morse Earl goes, “every day may not be good, but there’s good in every day”.
2. How much time are you spending on social media?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – social media is a huge love/hate relationship for many of us. I’ll be the first to say the first thing I automatically do when I wake up is check all my social media accounts.
Switch up your routine a little by changing the time of day you check social media and notice the difference in how you feel i.e. waking up without the instant glum feeling of not looking like Kim Kardashian. Recognise when you require a time out from the depths of scrolling endlessly.
Alternatively, choose to follow accounts that make you feel good such as influencers who promote body positivity. Ashley Graham (@ashleygraham) and Malin Andersson (@missmalinsara) are my absolute favourites for this as well as Megan Crabbe (@bodyposipanda). 3. Try a home workout for fun
Getting up and moving your body, if only for 10 minutes or so can leave you feeling refreshed and in a better mood. YouTube is a great asset for this (forget that it’s classed as a social media…). You can find anything from 5 minute workouts to hour long ones, that’s the perk of YouTube for you. My go-to at the minute is Yoga with Adrienne, something about her calming voice completely puts me at ease.

4. Make time for you time
Now is an important time as ever to focus on the things you love that bring you joy. We often underestimate the power of feel-good activities, whether it’s a walk amongst nature or a 5-minute check-in with yourself each evening.

5. How do you define healthy?
Healthy is as healthy does. And a lesson I’ve come to learn (and am still in the process of learning) is that being healthy doesn’t lie in six-packs or being a certain size. It lies in eating good foods that are beneficial to both your body and your mind.
It’s not never eating chocolate again (I couldn’t survive if that was the case) or having to exercise each and every waking hour of the day. It’s finding a balance that works for you, but most importantly, one that YOU benefit from.
Look after yourself and give yourself a break for simply trying to make it through these challenging weeks we are facing in lockdown.
